Former President Donald Trump and his team were briefed on what his office described as “specific threats from Iran to assassinate him,” according to a press release.
According to the release from Trump, the briefing on Wednesday came from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which said the threats are an “effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States.”
“Intelligence officials have identified that these continued and coordinated attacks have heightened in the past few months, and law enforcement officials across all agencies are working to ensure President Trump is protected and the election is free from interference,” Steven Cheung, Trump Campaign Communications Director, said in the release.
Cheung went on to place some of the blame for the attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, saying that the “terror regime in Iran loves the weakness of Kamala Harris.”
“He will let nothing stop him or get in his way to fight for the American people and to Make America Great Again,” Cheung said.
Trump has been the target of two attempted assassinations this summer, with the most recent being this month when a gunman was waiting outside his golf course in Florida.
The Secret Service members ahead of Trump on the course reported that they saw the barrel of his firearm poking through some bushes, and they quickly engaged.
Calls for Trump to have increased security have been ongoing since the first gunman attempted to take his life, shooting him in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.
In August, 64-year-old Warren Jones Crazybull of Sandpoint was arrested after he made at least nine phone calls to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, threatening to kill him on July 31, according to an affidavit and criminal complaint.
The Secret Service shared on Monday that Trump’s security detail would be increased following “recent events.”
