If you thought you knew everything about crawfish, think again because new information just got added to the book.

A pair of brand new crawfish species were discovered to exist in North Carolina, and only North Carolina, according to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.

Dubbed the Stony Fork crayfish and the Falls crayfish, they exist only in the upper Yadkin River basin, according to Bronwyn Williams, the museum’s research curator of non-molluscan invertebrates.

Both also can only survive in very specific conditions – conditions only found in the Yadkin River.

“From what we can tell, these particular stream captures have not previously been documented either geologically or biologically,” Williams said, according to Gray News.
