A pair of Texas teachers say they were fired from their jobs because of their attendance at a drag performance in their off time.
The two educators taught at First Baptist Academy in Baytown.
One of the teachers, Kristi Maris, was a 19-year employee, and she said that her firing came because she went to a drag show on July 13 at a Houston dining establishment called Hamburger Mary’s and posted it on social media, according to ABC 7.
“They told me because I went to this show and posted a picture, I wasn’t walking in a godly manner,” she said. “I feel like we were treated like criminals.”
The school’s senior pastor pointed ABC 7 to a line in the school’s operating procedures manual: “I will act in a godly and moral fashion at work, on Facebook and in my community.”
The other teacher who was let go has not spoken publicly on the incident yet, but Maris at least has no regrets. “I’ll do it again,” she said.
