Vice President Kamala Harris is under fire by some in the right after a video of her laughing as she walked up to a gathered press assembly where she was expected to be asked about the deadly chaos in Afghanistan.
When approaching the reporters who were ready to hear from the VP, she was already grinning. She let out one of her trademark laughs, and told reporters to slow down before she sobered and answered.
Harris has already been criticized for her delayed response to addressing the conflict in Afghanistan.
In the video going viral, a reporter asked Harris about her “response on Americans,” and the VP cut her off before she could finish the question.
“Hold on, hold on — slow down, everybody!” Harris said, laughing. The sounds of a tarmac were everywhere, making it unclear what she could hear or what she was laughing about before the reporters approached.
After the chuckle, Harris said that Afghanistan “couldn’t have a higher priority right now” for the Biden administration. Harris shared this while she was headed to Asia for stops in Singapore and Vietnam.
Many took to Twitter, expressing their frustration with how Harris responded to the situation.
This is not the first time Harris has had an awkward encounter with the press as she was repeatedly asked why she hadn’t visited the U.S. Mexico border for the first six months of her term. Sometimes, she laughed during the response.
In Singapore, Harris spoke at a press conference with the country’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday. Lee noted that the US’ botched departure from the Middle East had left thousands of people seeking evacuation at the Kabul airport and thousands of Americans stranded across the Taliban-controlled country.
“Countries make calculations and take positions, and they have to make calc- — recalculations and adjust their positions from time to time,” Lee said.
“Sometimes it can be done smoothly; sometimes there are hiccups. Sometimes there’s — things go awry and take time to put right.”
Harris then spoke, saying that the country will need to go back and look at what happened.
“There’s no question there will be and should be a robust analysis of what has happened,” she said.
“But right now, there’s no question that our focus has to be on evacuating American citizens, Afghans who worked with us, and vulnerable Afghans, including women and children.”
A week ago, a poll from NBC News showed that 60% of Americans do not agree with how Biden has handled the removal of troops from Afghanistan. Overall, his approval rating has dipped to 49%, as many Americans feel the country is moving in the wrong direction.
