SAN FRANCISCO (KNX) — Police responded to a massive grab-and-run robbery at the Louis Vuitton store in San Francisco’s Union Square Friday night.
Video filmed by witnesses showed the looters running after ransacking the luxury retailer at Geary Blvd. and Stockton sometime after 8 p.m.
A trail of thieves exited the store running down the street in different directions. San Francisco police chased after several of the culprits, including on foot. Several officers chased suspects running to apparent getaway vehicles but used batons to break the windows on one car as they demanded the driver exit. Nearby luxury retailers including Fendi and Yves Saint Laurent were also hit, according to media reports.
Most of the purse-snatchers got away from officers, KTVU reported. It's unclear how much they took from the store.
Police outside Chicago responded to a similar robbery Thursday as thieves “pulled out garbage bags from their coats and started filling them with merchandise,” according to Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger. Authorities estimated those suspects made off with at least $120,000 worth of merchandise.
