“I’ve been waiting for this, for trespassing on the Capitol grounds. I’m gonna punch him out, and I’m gonna go to jail and I’m gonna be happy.”

That quote from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, recorded by her documentarian daughter during the harrowing events of January 6, 2021, and recently shown to the public for the first time, has resulted in a wave of publicity for the longtime congresswoman.

Now, in a new interview, Pelosi was asked about the words she uttered that day and whether, in hindsight, she actually meant them.

Speaking with Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC, Pelosi didn’t specifically confirm that she would have punched the man who was, at the time, still the sitting President of the United States.

Instead, she said it was a threat that she is certain she never would have been asked to back up.

“He wouldn’t have had the courage to come to the Hill. He’s all talk,” Pelosi said.

She said Trump’s attempt to subvert the certified election results from American voters needs to be considered a grave threat to the very foundations of the country.

“So you have to recognize that they are undermining our democracy,” she said. “And if people think that … can be casual about that, they just don’t realize how serious the Republicans are about undermining our democracy.”
