The Louisiana general election is set for tomorrow. With the Secretary of State's Office projecting turnout around 20 percent, who has the advantage in three statewide runoffs?
One expert says: the GOP. LAPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says the low turnout benefits the Republican candidates running for secretary of state, treasurer, and attorney general.
"I think the status quo holds," Alford said.
According to Alford, chronic Republican voters to turn out for the runoff election.
"They were well represented in the early voting process," Alford said. "They were well represented in the primary. So, I think they are going to be well represented in the runoff. I think we're looking at a continuation of the Republican wave that started in October. I think that will continue into these runoff elections."
Alford adds that former President Donald Trump's influence will also impact the runoff races.
"It's also very much a Trump ballot," Alford said. "For certain, it looks like Donald Trump is positioned to be one of the more important non-Louisiana resident voices that's shaping state government right now."
Alford says the former president's fingerprints are all over this election cycle. In addition to endorsing Jeff Landry in the governor's race, Trump has endorsed the front runners in the secretary of state, treasurer, and attorney general's races. Landry has already appointed a former Trump Administration official to run the Department of Environmental Quality. Alford says if the G-O-P candidates on Saturday's ballot win, Louisiana's government could become home for more Trump supporters.
"Should (the GOP frontrunners) be elected and follow Jeff Landry's suit, we could see more hires from the Trump Administration," Alford said.
