Senator Bill Cassidy has picked up another opponent from within his own party. New Iberia Republican State Senator Blake Miguez announced his candidacy Tuesday.

Miguez took aim at Cassidy, calling him a "RINO," or "Republican in name only," for Cassidy's vote to convict Donald Trump after Trump's second impeachment in 2021.

The U.S. House impeached Trump after the attempted insurrection on January 6, for "statements that encouraged—and foreseeably resulted in—imminent lawless action at the Capitol."

Republican State Treasurer John Fleming is also challenging Cassidy from the MAGA right.

In 2024, the Louisiana legislature voted to return the state to a closed party primary system for some elections, including the U.S. Senate. The Republican primary will be held in April. The general election is November 3, 2026.
