Business lobbyist Waguespack joins LA governor's race
Louisiana Office of Governor

Louisiana Association of Business and Industry President and CEO Stephen Waguespack announced Thursday afternoon that he is stepping down as head of the business lobby, and will be running for Governor of Louisiana as a Republican.

Waguespack has led LABI since 2013. Before that, the Republican served as Governor Bobby Jindal’s Chief of Staff and Executive Counsel.

"My wife and I have been overwhelmed with the amount of support and inquiries we got" on running for governor, Waguespack told WWL-TV's Paul Murphy.

"We know what's at stake. Louisiana's future's at stake, and so we know we're going to be engaged thoroughly."

Waguespack joins a Republican field that includes Attorney General Jeff Landry, Treasurer John Schroder, state Sen. Sharon Hewitt of Slidell and state Rep. Richard Nelson of Mandeville.

Shawn Wilson, who recently stepped down as Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, announce his candidacy this week, making him the lone Democrat in the campaign so far.

Lake Charles trial lawyer and minister Hunter Lundy is running as an independent.
