New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has had little to say about the effort to recall her, but today her campaign issued a statement.
Her supporters say new documents show that much of the support for the recall is coming from Republican supporters of former president Donald Trump.
Recall organizers say money is coming in from people from all throughout the political spectrum.
"The recall effort’s 45-day campaign finance report confirms this is a Republican-backed effort, with two Trump mega-donors contributing more than half of the effort’s money," said Cantrell Campaign Manager Maggie Carroll.
She says the paperwork shows that Donald "Boysie" Bollinger and Rick Farrell are the two biggest donators to the recall fund.
Carroll posted that Bollinger was Louisiana finance co-chair of Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns. She says he "famously stood by the president after the January 6 insurrection, telling The Advocate he believed left wing antagonists may have infiltrated the group of rally-goers."
The Cantrell camp also says that Rick Farrell told Mayor Cantrell in a March 2020 email, “I support the other party.”
Recall leader Eileen Carter says it is just another tactic to distract voters from Cantrell's shortcomings.
"They refuse to acknowledge the numerous small donations of Orleans parish voters and supporters who have donated time and money to make their voices heard. They highlight what they want to continue their lies and detract from the truth while trying to divide our city. Don’t go for the okie doke. The mayor isn’t doing her job. That is the focus. We encourage all New Orleanians and supporters to donate - big and small - according to their ability to help move New Orleans forward."
Carter says money is coming in from all corners.
"We have donations from Democrats, Libertarians, No Party, Independents and Republicans - we are all in this together."
