Cassidy: Americans should feel optimistic after Republican meeting with Biden

Senator Bill Cassidy says he walked away from Monday’s meeting with fellow Republican Senators and President Joe Biden feeling good about the topics discussed surrounding the next COVID-19 relief efforts.

Senator Cassidy told CNBC’s Shepard Smith that Americans should feel ‘more optimistic’ about the Republican meeting with the President.

“There was common ground that we got to take care of the American people,” said Cassidy. “The President said we may disagree on some things but we are not going to disagree on the need to take care of those in need.”

Sen. Cassidy explained the President and Republicans at the meeting both agreed they would let the data drive the next covid relief bill.

“I’ve been a big advocate for state and local aid, but one of the data points was a recent report from JP Morgan, using data from the states, saying most states lost less than 2% of their revenue year-over-year,” said Cassidy. “A state like New York is down 1.5%, my state has been hit hard; 4.6% decline in revenue. That is the sort of data we need to make a wise decision, not just throw money out there and hope it works.”
