State Senator Cleo Fields is the projected winner of the Louisiana Sixth Congressional District.
Pollster John Couvillon of JMC Analytics says Fields will avoid a runoff and return to the U.S. House.
Fields was the favorite to win the district which was redrawn twice after the 2020 Census. The first attempt was rejected by a federal judge for violating the Voting Rights Act. The district was redrawn to create a second majority-Black district in Louisiana.
The second version is currently being challenged on the grounds it violates the 14th Amendment by using race as the determining factor.
The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on that this winter, and declined to order the state to revert to the previous boundaries for the 2024 election.
