New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell probably isn’t too happy with Saturday’s election results. Political analyst Clancy DuBos told WWL’s Newell that the loss of several of her allies on the City Council could make it more difficult for her to get her second term priorities approved.
“The Mayor has no votes on the council right now, no obvious floor leader if you will,” said DuBos who described the incoming group as much more likely to exercise independence once they take office next year.
Incumbents got wiped out in the primary and run-offs this year. In particular three incumbents that tended to side with the Mayor.
“For this past tenure, this first term for Mayor Cantrell Jay Banks was her staunchest ally, Cyndi Nguyen was a very reliable vote, most of the time Jared Brossett was there for her,” said DuBos. “They are all gone now.”
DuBos said this reversal turn of fortune for the Mayor is not exactly uncommon, or unexpected.
“Every mayor in his or her second term faces a more independent council because you have several people on the council who want the mayor’s job,” said DuBos. “Nobody I know of ever got elected mayor by being a champion of the previous mayor.”
