Voters are going to the polls across Southeast Louisiana today consider tax issues and a handful of races.

Elections got underway this morning in Orleans, St. Tammany, Plaquemines, and St. John the Baptist parishes.
New Orleans voters are deciding if they want to nearly double the tax for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Susan Hutson says her office needs the extra revenue to hire, increase wages, upgrade equipment and more at the jail. The Bureau of Governmental Research advised voters to reject the tax hike, saying the sheriff lacks specific plans and has not adequately made the case of the increase.
Voters in New Orleans are also deciding a criminal court judge runoff, along with some neighborhood tax propositions.
On the Northshore, St. Tammany Parish voters are casting ballots on renewing the property tax that funds much of the coroner’s office.
There is a city council runoff in Covington.
St. John also has a tax renewal for public schools. There is a property tax proposition in Plaquemines Parish for hospital services.
Polls close at 8:00pm.
