Term-limited Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards says his transition out of office is going as planned. As he prepares to turn over power to Louisiana’s 57th governor, Edwards says his team is prepared to hand over the reins to Jeff Landry’s administration.
Edwards says he plans to meet with Governor-Elect Landry next week. He says he’s rooting for Landry’s success and hopes he can continue to move the state forward.
“I really hope that he will carefully measure the things that he wants to do and really look at the success that we’ve been able to achieve in a variety of areas. And hopefully more or less we will see things headed in the same direction.”
He says they are also preparing detailed information to share.
“By putting together certain information, briefings if you will. Every day critical decisions had to be made so when they come in the office on January 8th there are going to be some things that are going to be on the two-yard line, and I don’t want them to be surprised.”
Governor Bobby Jindal, Edwards’s predecessor, left the state in a huge fiscal crisis. Edwards says his administration is leaving the state in a better position.
“I will tell you it’s the sort of transition we wished that we would have had coming into office eight years ago. But I think it’s important that we do this.”
Under Edwards administration, he expanded Medicare and implemented a $53 hundred dollar teacher pay raise. He has also managed the recovery of Hurricane Delta, Ida, and Laura.
