Louisiana Democrats are congratulating President Joe Biden and welcoming his decision to withdraw from the 2024 Presidential Election.
Former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who is serving as the co-chair of the 2024 Democratic presidential campaign, says he is ready to help Vice President Kamala Harris as she prepares to take the reins of the campaign.
“I am proud to support Vice President Kamala Harris as the next Democratic nominee for president,” Landrieu said on Twitter. “The contrast in November will be clear—a distinguished prosecutor versus a convicted felon.
She will prosecute the case about the real risk of Donald Trump’s chaos, division, and greed while offering an optimistic vision for the future.
“More importantly, she has what it takes to be the president—steely resolve, unbridled determination, and compassion for helping others.”
Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Randal Gaines says the party will work to honor Biden’s legacy by helping to get Vice President Kamala Harris elected to the Oval Office.
“We are confident that Joe Biden’s legacy will inspire his successor to preserve and continue to advance his transformative economic, international, and legislative accomplishments, and that he will employ his experience and vast knowledge to ensure that Vice President Kamala Harris will continue to deliver tremendous leadership for our great nation as our next president,” Gaines said, in part, in a statement. “Joe Biden's choice to step aside and endorse Kamala Harris isn’t just a leadership change; it’s a bold statement of our party's future direction.
Kamala Harris is now at the forefront of our battle against the extreme right-wing agenda that threatens our democracy, our rights, and our values — and we will honor Joe Biden’s legacy, and the decision that he has made today, by throwing our full support behind her in beating Donald Trump again this November.”
New Orleans City Councilmember Helena Moreno said Biden put his country first in making his decision.
“This is a tough moment,” Moreno said in a statement. “President Biden is a true patriot and has fought hard and delivered on many fronts for the people of America. We are tremendously grateful for his years of dedicated service. Now he has passed the torch on to Vice-President Kamala Harris, who is the obvious choice to unite the party as our nominee and win the presidency this fall.”
Rep. Troy Carter (D-New Orleans), who publicly supported Biden and Biden’s initial resistance to calls for him to drop out of the race, said he stands behind the President and his decision. Carter called that decision a “selfless act.” He also said he has “every confidence in Vice President Kamala Harris” in her bid for the presidency.
"President Joe Biden's legacy stands as a testament to his unparalleled commitment to our nation,” Carter said in a statement. “As a Senator, Joe Biden was a steadfast advocate for civil rights, voting rights, and the rule of law. As President, Joe Biden leveraged his deep institutional knowledge and strong congressional relationships to pass transformative legislation that has significantly empowered families in Louisiana and across the country. His leadership has brought about meaningful change and progress. Notably, President Biden made history with the nomination of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first African American woman to the Supreme Court of the United States, further cementing his legacy as a champion of equality and justice.”
