Former New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu has died.

He was 92.

Landrieu served two terms as mayor.  He had nine children and 37 grandchildren.

His son, Mitch, also served as mayor for two terms as was Louisiana's Lt. Governor.

His daughter, Mary, served as a US Senator from Louisiana as well.

Landrieu won praise for helping New Orleans through difficult times for race relations as segregation came to an end.  He worked to ensure and inclusive government and workforce in New Orleans.

In his inauguration speech he said, "New Orleans can be a city of hope, a city that illuminates the great opportunities of urban America.

He began his time as mayor in 1970 after serving as a state legislator and member of the city council.

Current National Urban League President and former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial said of Landrieu, "He took the important first step of integrating City Hall and thereby sending a strong message about the future of the city when it came to racial justice.”

Landrieu also helped oversee development of the modern Central Business District and New Orleans skyline.

The Superdome was completed on his watch, and he was mayor as Downtown New Orleans saw the growth of skyscrapers and high-rise hotels.

Landrieu also served as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for two years under President Jimmy Carter.
