For the first time since the state has been attempting to update its congressional districts from the 2020 Census, all sides agree that the matter needs to be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court

“And I think the fact that all of us are on the same page speaks to the direness of the situation that we’re in here and how essential it is for the Supreme Court to give us some resolution and finality really,” said NAACP Legal Defense Fund attorney Jared Evans.

For more than two years, there have been multiple sets of districts that have been either vetoed or rejected by two separate judicial districts. Evans said it is time for the Supreme Court to settle the issue for the 2024 congressional election.

“So that the candidates know, the Secretary of State knows, and importantly, the public knows who they’re going to be voting for and then the litigation can pick back up next year when it’s time to start working on the 2026 map,” said Evans.

The NAACP and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill have filed for an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court. Evans said a Monday deadline has been set for other parties to file.

“And I think within the first couple of weeks of June we should know what the map is going to look like,” said Evans.

Qualifying dates for the November election are July 17 through the 19.
