A new statewide poll finds a majority of Louisiana Republicans support former President Donald Trump over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Pollster Ed Chervenak conducted the survey for Edgewater Research. He says 56 percent support Trump’s candidacy while 36 percent would like to see DeSantis win the Republican nomination.
“Governor DeSantis did very well in Florida and he seems to be the pundit's choice to be the main competitor for Donald Trump and so we just wanted to see where those number were at this particular time,” said Chervenak.
Trump received 58 percent of the vote from Louisiana voters in the 2020 presidential election. Chervenak says Trump continues to get strong support among Louisiana Republicans, but he believes the survey results are a positive for DeSantis
“Mr. Trump enjoys majority support, he’s a known quantity. But the numbers aren’t bad for Governor DeDainttis considering that he probably doesn’t have the same level of name recognition in the state that Donald Trump has,” said Chervenak.
The poll surveyed 474 registered Republicans in Louisiana. Chervenak says eight percent of those polled are undecided.
