Recreation cannabis sales and usage will remain illegal in Louisiana for at least another year.
The House Criminal Justice Committee killed House Bill 24, which would have removed criminal penalties on pot possession. Companion bills would have set up a regulatory system for the legal sale and distribution of weed and would have established a sales tax on the drug.
Rep. Candace Newell (D-New Orleans) authored the bill, which was deferred by a 7-4 vote. Rep. Ray Garofalo (R-Chalmette) moved to defer the bill.
