Two days before the deadline to submit their petition to elections officials, organizers of the effort to recall New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell say they have hit the mark.

Recall vice-chair Eileen Carter says they have acquired more than 49,000 signatures. That would be around the 20 percent threshold of registered, active New Orleans voters needed to trigger a recall election.

Last week, recall organizers filed suit to force the Orleans registrar to strike around 30,000 voters from the rolls claiming they had either died or moved out of the parish. That could further lower the number of signatures needed.

Carter told WWL's Dave Cohen on the Newell Normand Show that whether or not they are successful in that effort, they will present enough signatures to set up the recall vote.

"We absolutely, 100 percent will be handing this petition in with the required number of signatures," she said.

Signatures must still be verified by elections officials in order to force a recall vote. Carter has said they want to gain more signatures than the minimum required because they expect some signatures to be rejected.

The deadline for the recall campaign to turn in its petition is Wednesday. If enough signatures are verified, it will be up to Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards to set a date for the recall election.
