LaPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford is reporting that longtime New Orleans State Senator Karen Carter Peterson has resigned as Senator for District 5. Alford told WWL Senate President Page Cortez confirmed the resignation, saying he has received her resignation letter. A statement from Peterson said it has to do with the lawmaker's long-time struggle with depression and gambling.
District 5 encompasses a large stretch of territory in New Orleans including parts of Uptown, Leonidas, and Mid City.
Peterson was first elected to the State Senate in 2010 after spending the previous decade in the State House. She also has served as the Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party. She recently ran 2nd in the race for the 1st Congressional District.
