Is the crisis at the Southern border hurting America? Last month, it was not unusual for 10,000 migrants to cross the border into the United States daily. Former President Trump has been viciously critical of the Biden administration for allowing the Southern border to be open.
Now that a bipartisan bill has been crafted to essentially close the border, Donald Trump is condemning the bill.
Trump’s objection to a bipartisan bill to close the border proves what I have often talked about - solving the crisis at the border is not as important as using the border as a political toy. Trump has been demanding that President Biden close the border to make Biden look bad during the 2024 presidential campaign, but when Biden and Republicans worked together on a bill to close the border Trump suddenly changed his rhetoric.
Monday afternoon, Trump went on social media saying, “Millions of people, many from jails and mental institutions located all over the World, that are POURING INTO OUT COUNTRY. It is an INVASION the likes of which no country has ever had to endure.” He added, “I didn’t need a big, complex Democrat-oriented Border Bill, which will make Republicans look bad, I just closed the Border, and had, by far, the Safest Border in the History of our Country!”
If closing the border is important to the security of the United States, then why is closing the border suddenly the wrong thing to do? It’s because the border is a political toy being used by some politicians to win the White House in 2024. Solving the problems at the border is not as important as gaining a political advantage.
The human lives impacted by an open border are inconsequential in a presidential election year. Trump’s criticism of Biden over an open border was designed to damage Biden’s political image. Now that Biden and Republicans have worked together on a bill that would close the border, Trump is changing his political tune because, in truth, closing the border would be the worst thing that could happen in Trump’s crusade to be elected president in November. The border could be closed and Trump could still be elected because there are many other issues at play, but Trump’s quick turnaround underscores how the border is being used in the game of politics.
What Trump is saying now is that the threat of allowing 10,000 migrants in daily is not as great a threat as Biden being re-elected. Forget about the talk about crimes committed by illegal migrants - the important issue is not American or foreign humanity - the important issue is to get elected by any means necessary!
