Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy says he will announce soon whether he is running for governor, according to our partners at the Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate. This comes a day after his fellow Louisiana Republican in the Senate, John Kennedy, said he would make an announcement soon.
According to reports, Cassidy said, "I made a decision. I’ll make that announcement later this week."
Cassidy is in his second term as a U.S. Senator, having been reelected in 2020. He defeated incumbent Democrat Mary Landrieu in 2014.
Cassidy was one of a handful of Republican senators who voted unsuccessfully to convict Donald Trump in the former president's second impeachment trial. The House accused Trump of encouraging the violent attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
The Louisiana Republican Party censured Cassidy for his vote.
