Prince Philip has been released from the hospital and is returning home in time for Christmas, BBC reports.

A statement from Buckingham Palace reports that the duke has returned to the Queen's Sandringham Estate in Norfolk on Thursday. They thanked people for "their good wishes."

The Prince of Wales said Monday that his father had been "looked after very well" by the hospital staff.

Prince Philip had been admitted to the hospital as a precautionary measure for a pre-existing condition, a Buckingham Palace statement reports

“The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ doctor,” the palace said in a statement.

The Prince was admitted on Friday for “observation and treatment.” According to NBC News, the visit was already planned for the 98-year-old royal. He was not taken by ambulance, and it wasn’t an emergency.

Prince Philip is the husband to Queen Elizabeth II. The queen has remained at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, a spokesperson for the palace reports.

The prince is expected to remain in the hospital for the next few days. He is “the longest-serving consort of any British monarch,” NBC News reports.

This isn’t the first of Prince Philip’s hospital visits this year, as he was involved in a car accident in January. Following the incident, the prince voluntarily gave up his driver’s license.
