“I want you to watch Nancy Pelosi hand me that gavel… It’ll be hard not to hit her with it.”

Those comments, made by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy at a Saturday fundraiser for the Tennessee Republican Party, have drawn derision and outrage from the other side of the aisle.

The audio of McCarthy’s remarks was tweeted out by a reporter for Main Street Nashville.

McCarthy was said to be “obviously joking” when one of his spokesmen talked with NBC News.

House Speaker Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff Drew Hamill failed to see the humor and responded to the comment on Twitter.

“A threat of violence to someone who was a target of a #January6th assassination attempt from your fellow Trump supporters is irresponsible and disgusting.”

Pelosi’s fellow House Democrats were quick to blast McCarthy as well.

As the hashtag #ResignMcCarthy began to trend online, Democratic activists saw a spike in fundraising as the Democrats seek to retain their House majority in the upcoming 2022 midterm elections.

The animosity between McCarthy and Pelosi, both elected by constituents in California, is certainly not one-sided. Just last week, Pelosi called McCarthy a “moron” as he railed against new mask mandates amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.
