It seems there are two types of MAGA supporters. One group of MAGA supporters loves, honors, and cherishes Donald Trump and believes he is the savior of America and was sent by God to save this country. Then, there’s the group of MAGA supporters who are promoting the idea that we need to “Make America Great Again” in such a way as to totally trash America in its present state. The second group is made up of Trump supporters and they want Trump to be president, but because of all the political BS attached to Trump, they want to make it seem like they're really promoting the idea of “making America great again,” and not just Trump himself.
I began thinking about the MAGA supporters that I perceive as being right-wing radicals and how deeply dedicated they are to Donald Trump and all that he stands for and I posed this question on my talk show: Do MAGA supporters want Trump to win the election and if possible, have Trump as POTUS indefinitely?
When you witness the behavior of many MAGA supporters and hear their testimony toward their beloved hero, it’s easy to get the impression that many Americans want Trump to win and remain president as long as he is physically able to do the job. I realize that a president can only serve two terms in office, but when I think about what happened on January 6, I can’t help but feel that many MAGA supporters would like to live under a Trump presidency forever. But then, of course, it would become a Trump dictatorship.
As soon as I posed that question on the air, I had a few callers who identified themselves as MAGA supporters, but they said they would not want Trump to be president indefinitely. Those calls made it clear that all MAGA supporters are not maniacal with their political expectations, but those MAGA supporters focused more on making America great again and felt Trump was the best candidate to restore America to its greatness.
Supporting the idea of making America great again carries with it the implication that America is not great now. A couple of that group of MAGA supporters said that we need to make America great again with a passion that left me with the feeling that they were actually trashing America today.
Maybe some Americans who align themselves with the MAGA movement are subconsciously distancing themselves from Trump himself and are breaking off into a separate campaign of trashing America and Trump is the perfect trash collector who can bring America back.
Is America really so bad that trashing this country is an effective campaign to get Trump elected? MSNBC host Joe Scarborough launched into a full rant against Fox News claiming the conservative network is “obsessed with trashing America.” Scarborough, who served as a Republican congressman from 1995 to 2001, talked about how Fox News appears to be leading a charge of condemning America where democracy doesn’t work, the economy sucks, the president is a criminal, and that list goes on. Is America really that bad?
There are solid standards showing that the economy is strong and unemployment is extremely low and the criticism that democracy is not working is coming from people who supported the actions of January 6, when there was a real attempt to block the outcome of an election. And in the end, democracy worked because the coup was thwarted and the election was certified.
And should we make America great again when in 2007 the minimum wage was $5.85 an hour? Or back further when a young generation was fighting the establishment with violent protests? Or back even further when Black and white people had separate restrooms and water fountains? Exactly what time does this group want to bring America back to - when America was really great?
It is becoming obvious that a right-wing effort is underway to trash America in an effort to make former President Donald Trump the only person who can clean up the trash and “Make America Great Again.”
