Since insider industry groups that vote on the best movies, TV shows, plays, and music often reject the nominees that have reached critical mass in popularity, the record-setting Grammy for Album of the Year for Taylor Swift’s album “Midnights,” indicates that her creative artistry is not shrouded by her overwhelming popularity.
The Album of the Year win by Swift broke the record for an artist winning the most awards for Album of the Year, breaking the tie with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon.
Prior to the presentation of the 2024 Grammys, there was social media buzz that Taylor Swift was going to reveal a secret during an acceptance speech. With all of the attention paid to the Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce love story, I’m sure many speculated that the secret announcement might be a wedding announcement. But that was not the case. Swift said, “I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for two years…” She went on to reveal, “My brand new album comes out April 19th.”
Swift’s special secret had nothing to do with her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce, in fact, she didn’t even mention Travis, and maybe that seemed strange considering how much publicity has been generated from their relationship. Taylor Swift would be a huge global superstar even if her love interest were not a star in the NFL whose team is in the Super Bowl. But I can’t help but think that her effort to attend so many of Travis’ games and her obvious displays of affection for him in stadium suites and the PDA on the field has not been beneficial to her career.
I know the winning artists at any awards show have a limited amount of time and Taylor Swift had managers, producers, and her professional staff to thank, but with all of the media attention paid to the power couple, Taylce or Traviswift, she could have at least mentioned him.
Travis Kelce was not in attendance at the Grammy Awards because he had practice with the Chiefs Saturday and Sunday was a travel day so his absence was not a protest or a sign that the relationship is not going well, but I can’t help but think that not even mentioning Travis may have been a subconscious nod that the relationship is not as deep as we have been led to believe.
But we will watch and see what the coverage is like Sunday at the Super Bowl where Taylor is supposed to be after a long trip from leaving the stage in Tokyo where The Eras Tour is this week.
Do you think Taylor failing to even mention Travis at the Grammy Awards is meaningful?
