In my last blog, I mentioned the fearmongering factor in this presidential election year of 2024. One of the fearmongering points coming from the right-wing radicals is about President Biden leaving the Southern border open for the purpose of letting a massive number of illegal migrants enter the country so they can all vote for Biden in the November election.
Former President Trump has been on the campaign trail pushing this idea and many conservatives and Republicans have accepted the premise and are spreading this idea through their Facebook, Instagram, and other social media accounts. The problem is that the idea that illegal migrants will be voting for President Biden is bogus.
According to the law, it is illegal for noncitizens to vote in Federal elections. Studies have shown that illegal migrant voting is a myth, yet, the fear of illegal migrants swaying the election to Biden’s favor - based on fantasy - persists. Sadly, there will be those Americans who will accept is as a reality.
Non-citizen voting was a problem in America many years ago, but that changed after the Civil War and a surge of immigration into the U.S. As far back as the 1800s, there was the belief that illegal migrants were being brought to the polls to vote a certain way. In modern times, there is zero evidence that massive groups of illegal migrants have entered the U.S. and voted illegally.
A recent Gallup poll showed that the percentage of Americans who believed that immigration was the top issue facing the country increased from 20% to 28%. Elon Musk allowed the promotion that migrants were being “imported” into the U.S. to vote to flow on his social media site X. But that information is totally false.
The few cases of illegal migrants voting is a sample of the illegal voting that occurs in every election. We know that dead people vote, but there are cases of dead people voting for both sides and that is never an excuse for claiming that the outcome of an election is not fair. In fact, during the investigations into Trump’s claim that the 2020 election was stolen, cases popped up where Republicans were actually guilty of voter fraud in an attempt to elect Trump.
This is America and people are free to allow themselves to be brainwashed and to believe stuff that is simply not true, but the rest of us have a responsibility to call out the fake news, particularly the fake news that is designed to sway opinions. It becomes our responsibility as U.S. citizens to condemn the use of misinformation and support the truth.
The truth: it is illegal for illegal migrants to vote in Federal elections and there is no evidence supporting the fearmongering that Biden is keeping the border open to flood new voters into America in time for November.
