
Officials held a mass vaccination event in Jefferson Parish today. It was at the Alario Center by appointment only. Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng all of the slots were filled quickly and people were eager to get the vaccine.
She urged everyone to get their shots when eligible and to keep taking steps to reduce the COVID spread after the huge spike that followed the holiday season.
Sheng stressed that with Mardi Gras in one week, people should not jeopardize the progress made. Unlike New Orleans, though, she is not closing bars.
"We are going to allow our bars to remain open, however, we are going to be very vigilant in making sure all of these establishments abide by the current guidelines."
She there is now street in Jefferson Parish than has large density of bars like Bourbon Street.
She says people should enjoy the season in a safe way, outside.
"We really want to stress for everyone to be safe. There are many avenues to enjoy the spirit of the Carnival season in a safe way, outdoors, many decorations throughout out community, we want to encourage that."
