Sheng: Masks and distance more important as numbers improve, some break rules

Sheng

Jefferson Parish leaders are urging people to keep wearing their masks and staying apart from one another so officials don't have to back track on lifting restrictions.

Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng said, "Our numbers are still low.  Our five day average is still about 34 or 35 cases."

With that, they are allowing more activities to return.

"We are back to our libraries being open as it was pre-COVID... we have tackle football that's starting, and volleyball and cheerleading."

She fears, however, that could turn around if people aren't vigilant.

"Hopefully we can keep those numbers low," Sheng explained. "Until a vaccine is widely available... we have to learn how to live with this disease."

She says while most businesses are following the rules, there have been some cases of bars breaking the rules.

Sheng specifically called out the new City Bar on Veterans Blvd. that opened last weekend.

"I was disappointed... they just had no regard that COVID was in our community: no masks, no social distancing and they've got to do better than that."

The parish president called it unacceptable.

"We're not going to tolerate that because we've worked to hard to get here, and we are not going to let them be that super spreader event for us."

Officials did go to the bar after reports of jammed packed crowds.

"They were warned, and we will watch them."

Sheng urges everyone to keep doing what got us to this point of keeping the virus at bay.

"We don't want to get lulled into that mind set of, 'Let's be looser. Let's undo these things that we know.'  In fact, we have to do them even more so because we are having more activities in the community." the parish president pleaded. "Wear your masks, wash your hands, maintain the social distancing."
