CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily grounded all Southwest Airlines flights nationwide Tuesday morning, after the agency said it received a request from the airline to “pause all departures.”
The FAA said Southwest made the request due to an “internal technical issue.”
Although Southwest service resumed shortly after 10 a.m., many travelers took to Twitter to try and get some clarity from the airline. Southwest employees on Twitter acknowledged “multiple delays” Tuesday but offered little information otherwise.
“As of now, we do not have a time frame for when this will be resolved,” Southwest tweeted in reply to one user. “Please know that our teams across the board are working diligently to get you on your way ASAP.”
At Midway Airport, dozens of flights were delayed. The airline’s disastrous meltdown during the 2022 holiday season was still fresh in the minds of many travelers.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m., Southwest Airlines tweeted that operations resumed following a pause in service. The airline directed travelers to visit its website to check their flight service.
