The first group of juvenile offenders that were being held at the Bridge City Center for Youth are now at a temporary facility at Angola.

Gov. John Bel Edwards and Office of Juvenile Justice Officials announced the plan earlier this year. It came after multiple escapes and incidents of inmates violence at the juvenile detention center.

State Senator Pat Connick says his constituents have been waiting for this.

"It's great for the Westbank, for the Eastbank and the entire general greater New Orleans area."

He says ten inmates were transferred this morning.

A federal judge ruled that the state's plan for housing juveniles separate from the adult inmate population on the state prison campus did not violate any laws, though she referred to the plan in her ruling as "untenable."

"While locking children in cells at night at Angola is untenable, the threat of harm the youngsters present to themselves, and others, is intolerable," Judge Shelly Dick ruled. "The untenable must yield to the intolerable."
