After delays, Livingston Parish man convicted of child rape

John Mack
Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office

A man accused of raping two young foster children has been convicted on first-degree rape, attempted first-degree rape, sexual battery, and indecent behavior with juveniles charges.

A Livingston Parish jury found John Mack guilty on those charges on Friday. Deliberations took less than four hours.

According to the victims' attorney, civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, Mack started abusing the girls when they were only six- and eight-years-old. One of the victims tried to report Mack to authorities for years, but state officials ignored her pleas. One of the victims also accused Mack of trafficking them for sex.

According to our partners at NOLA.com, Mack is the uncle of state Rep. Sherman Mack and Livingston Parish Councilman Shane Mack. Both of the younger Macks reportedly said they are estranged from their uncle and that he should pay for his crimes. Mack's connections reportedly led the Livingston Parish district attorney to remove himself from the case.
