Despite legislative setbacks, Gov. Landry as powerful as ever

Jeff Landry
Louisiana Legislature

With one week left to go in the Louisiana Legislature's special tax reform session, it appears that Governor Jeff Landry's agenda has hit a road block.

Landry's tax reform agenda is getting pushback in the state legislature, and the stalled measures may not have the votes to pass before next Monday's session deadline. Does that mean Landry has lost his political capital at the state capitol?

Political analysts say: not so fast.

"I think it would be a serious overstatement and flat out wrong to say the governor has lost his clout," political analyst Clancy Dubos said.

Dubos says Landry knows how to flex his muscle to get what he wants. In fact, Dubos says lawmakers have already given Landry many of the items on his gubernatorial wish list... while still serving as a check on the governor's power.

"The legislature is simply doing its job," Dubos said. "The relationship between any governor and the legislature is fluid."

LA Politics dot com publisher Jeremy Alford says even with those checks, Landry will find other ways to make his agenda law.

"We may see him to continue to push this through different avenues," Alford said. "I think there are a lot of Republican lawmakers who are ready to stand by Governor Landry, and they're ready to stand by Governor Landry's connection to former and future President Trump."
