Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards Thursday said he does not think bills in the legislature that would eliminate requirements to get a permit in order to carry concealed firearms are a good idea.
"I have a history as a legislator of voting against bills that would do away with the permit that is now necessary in order to have a concealed weapon," Edwards said during an afternoon news conference.
A legislative committee has approved a bill that would allow for anyone to carry a concealed firearm so long as they do not have a felony record. Supporters call it "constitutional carry."
The governor said the instruction residents must currently receive before being issued a concealed-carry permit is valuable and necessary for safety.
"I think it strikes the right balance to make sure that individuals go through that background check, that they have training on safety and on marksmanship," Edwards said. "All of that it seems to me, is proper."
