A Baton Rouge judge has denied a request to compel Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards to follow a legislative petition that would prevent the governor from issuing a new pandemic public health emergency order.
The petition would have ended the governor's declared public health emergency and prevented him from issuing a new one for seven days, but the judge ruled the petition specified a public health order that has already expired and been replaced.
Judge William Morvant then ruled that the law that allows a majority of either the state house or senate to cancel an executive order is unconstitutional, saying the constitution requires both chambers for such actions.
