The price of groceries is set to skyrocket according to Louisiana Ag Commissioner Mike Strain. This morning Strain told WWL’s Tommy Tucker that inflation, supply issues, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine are all to blame.
“We are in for some challenging times,” said Strain who highlighted corn, wheat, and soybean prices. “Some really, really very high commodity prices.”
These forthcoming food cost hikes coupled with a surge in the price at the pump mean families won’t have much of a discretionary budget for the foreseeable future. Strain expects the coming food price hikes will prompt many families to take a strong look at growing their own food.
“We’re really going to have to work hard as we say to put a tight pencil on the family budget,” said Strain. “You’re going to see a lot of family gardens this year and they are going to be growing them in pots, they are going to be growing them in the yards, they’re going to be growing them in the fields as a way to stretch that dollar.”
