Louisiana COVID hospitalizations drop, vaccinations up

COVID=10 hospitalizations in Louisiana are down 115 in today's update from the Louisiana Department of Health. However, the total number is still a high 2,729, higher than any of the previous three surges in Louisiana.

The state reports 72 new deaths today, and 5,131 new cases.

The unvaccinated still account for 91 percent of the people in the hospital suffering from COVID-19, but vaccinations continue increasing by the tens of thousands, weekly.

Another 61,548 people got their first shot of one of the three COVID vaccines since last Thursday. Close to 49 percent of Louisiana has had at least one shot (2,275,150). And with nearly 70,852 more people completing their shots, 40.95 percent of the state is fully vaccinated.

Here are the vaccination rates for each parish in the metro area, according to today's report from LDH (The number shows the percentage of residents who have received all their shots, based on 2018 Census estimates):

Orleans: 55.73%
Jefferson: 52.77%
St. Tammany: 46.51%
St. John the Baptist: 46.31%
St. Charles: 46.31%
Plaquemines: 43.67%
St. Bernard: 37.64%
Tangipahoa: 35.29%
Washington: 33.46%
