COVID-19 hospitalizations in Louisiana surged again in today's report from the Department of Health, up a whopping 95 to 1,008. Louisiana hasn't had more than a thousand hospitalized COVID-19 patients in nearly six months.

Total cases increased 3,127, and eleven more people have died.

With fewer than 37 percent of the state fully vaccinated, health officials warn more people will die, especially among the unvaccinated individuals, with the highly contagious Delta variant spreading rapidly among them.

"Two out of three people you see in the grocery store are not vaccinated," said LSU infectious disease specialist Dr. John Vanchiere. "That means we have a lot of risk in our community and that means more people will die in this pandemic."

Dr. Vanchiere says unless more people step up and get vaccinated, we can expect mask mandates and even lockdowns to return.
