The COVID surge keeps spreading among unvaccinated people. The Louisiana Department of Health today is reporting 6,707 cases in the past 24 hours.

The health department says that is the second-highest single day count since January 6, 2021. It is also more than 21 percent of the more than 32,000 tests gathered in the last 24 hours.

According to LDH, the tests collected are no more than a week old, meaning this large single-day number is not from a backlog, but from the continued surge of new infections. More than 99.5% are tied to community spread, rather than congregant settings like nursing homes.

Increases are being recorded across all age groups and regions of the state, with 18-29 year olds and LDH Region 2 (Baton Rouge area) leading the way.

Hospitalizations are up 169 to 1,390. Another 20 COVID-19 patients have died since yesterday's report.
