A proposal to de-criminalize prostitution in Louisiana is off the table, for now.
Bill author Mandie Landry says she is trying to protect victims of sex trafficking from prosecution, and presented several sex workers who testified how their line of work being illegal leaves them vulnerable to traffickers, abusers, and other criminals, because they fear prosecution if they report them.
But despite their sometimes emotional testimony, and sympathetic replies of some lawmakers, it became apparent that the bill would likely not be approves.
Landry deferred the bill, but with some members of the Committee on Criminal Justice saying the testimony had given them something to think about for future sessions.
