The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is looking for the person who shot and killed a black bear last weekend in Concordia Parish.

While black bears can be shot legally, this was not one of those instances – one of the reasons being that it happened in the Richard K. Yancy Wildlife Management Area.

“The season’s closed, and you have to be drawn — there’s only a certain amount of tags that are issued throughout the state to be able to hunt a black bear,” says LDWF Sgt. Cole Cupip. “And there are no tags issued in that particular part of the state.”

There’s a total reward of $3,500 for anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction in this shooting.

“Safari Club International Acadiana Chapter is offering a $2500 reward, and then Louisiana
Operation Game Thief is offering $1,000.”

Anyone with information should call the Louisiana Operation Game Thief Hotline at 1-800-442-2511 or use LDWF’s tip411 program.

Illegally taking a black bear is a misdemeanor in Louisiana, punishable by a fine of up to $950 and up to 120 days in jail; civil restitution of $4,350 will also be assessed.
