Louisiana populaton continues to fall as other southern states continue to see their population figures grow.
According to estimates released late Tuesday by the United States Census Bureau, the state of Louisiana lost 14,274 people--the fourth-largest population decrease in the United States in 2023. Louisiana was one of eight states that lost population. Only New York, California, and Illinois saw larger population decreases.
This comes as the rest of the South is seeing population increases, with some southern states seeing significant increases. According to the Census Bureau, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia accounted for two-thirds of the United States' population growth in 2023.
"Texas experienced the largest numeric change in the nation, adding 473,453 people, followed by Florida, which added 365,205 residents," Census Bureau officials said in the statement. "South Carolina and Florida were the two fastest-growing states in the nation, growing by 1.7% and 1.6%, respectively, in 2023. Georgia also reached a new population threshold as the state’s population exceeded 11 million people in 2023, increasing by 116,077 to a total population of 11,029,227."
The United States as a whole gained 1.6 million new residents in 2023, a 0.5-percent growth from last year. The Census Bureau cites the "broad national trends of deaths and net international migration returning to pre-COVID levels as well as reduced net domestic outmigration for some of the states" for the overall national population growth. According to the new estimates, the United States population stands at 334,914,895.
