An attempt to straight-up ban products containing THC -- the active chemical in marijuana that creates the "high" -- in Louisiana failed in the state legislature, but lawmakers did agree to new regulations before the body adjourned Monday.

The bill, headed to Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry's desk, would place age restrictions on who can purchase the products, limit how much THC they can contain per serving, and restrict the sale to certain businesses.

The THC products are usually sold as gummies or drinks. Currently, they can contain up to 8 milligrams of THC per serving. The proposed law would reduce that to 5 mg.

It would also prohibit gas stations from selling them. And THC-containing beverages would only be allowed at bars that have permits to sell them.

While anyone 18 or older can currently buy THC-containing products, the new law, if signed, would raise the age to 21.

The bill also places new rules on product testing, and mandates that anyone convicted of a felony cannot get a license to sell THC products.

If the governor signs the bill, the new law will take effect January 1, 2025.
