Newell: Democrats aren’t really changing their tune on immigration

Democratic mayors now admit that every state is a border state, and they complain to the federal government about the impacts of illegal immigrants coming into their cities and consuming city services. Of course, this is contrary to the political rhetoric they engaged in while they were running for office, when they said this type of diversity was a strength to our country - they said that over and over again. I spoke with Ira Mehlman, Media Director for the Federation For American Immigration Reform, who explained exactly what these Democrats are wanting and the dangers of a million illegal immigrants crossing into the United States unchecked.

I’m mystified by this 180-degree turn by the Mayor of Washington D.C. Muriel Bowser and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Last week they were talking about how this influx of illegals is mposing hardships on their cities and they've got a lot of responsibilities to their own people that they can't meet. The federal government is just bussing and flying people into their city and they just have to take care of them. But last weekend it appears they got a good talking-to, and come Monday morning Mayor Adams was singing a different tune. New York City, Washington, DC, and New Orleans are all on the border now because of the policies of the Biden administration. What’s interesting is all these Democratic mayors told President Biden that he has to stop this. They just asked for more money.

In the meantime these same Democrats are also advocating for amnesty.

The position of the Democratic party still is that the answer to the immigration issue is just to give amnesty to everyone, whether they come in legally or illegally. If you don’t have the housing to put people in, don’t have enough teachers in your schools, or don’t have access to healthcare, it doesn't really matter whether immigrants came legally or illegally. The impact is the same on the people in those communities which is exactly the reason why the United States, and every other nation on earth, has immigration laws.

We have a shortage of teachers, and a shortage of nurses. It just seems to me the illegal immigrantion crisis couldn't come at a worse time.

The U.S. immigration policy does not exist in a vacuum. There are real world effects. When people come here, they need jobs, they need a place to live, their children need education, and healthcare. If our country can't provide all of that, then you ought to be rethinking your immigration policy.

There have been over 500,000 “gotaway” immigrants that entered the U.S. since the 2022 fiscal year and another 900,000 the year before. This presents a real challenge because we don't actually know who's here and who's not here.

That’s 1.4 million people who have come into the United States illegally who we know nothing about. If we don't think that our enemies know that our borders are wide open and subject to exploitation, we're in for a rude surprise one of these days. When you have 1.4 million people who have recently crossed our borders, and we don't know where they are, you’re just asking for trouble.
