Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards today announced the federal government has approved the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Operation Blue Roof.
The program installs fiber-reinforced blue tarps over damages roofs, effective in keeping rainwater off of homes until a more permanent repair can be made.
The blue roofs are a free service but property owners will need to sign a Right of Entry (ROE) to allow the Corps' contractors access.
To apply for a blue roof, click here or call (800) 766-3258 (ROOF BLU). A recording at that number said they will start taking applications in 24 to 48 hours.
"Not all roof types qualify for the program," the Corps of Engineers cautions. "Roofs that are flat or made of metal or clay, slate, or asbestos tile do not qualify. All storm debris must be removed for the roof to qualify."
Property owners in the following parishes are eligible for the Blue Roof program:
Ascension
Jefferson
Lafourche
Livingston
Orleans
Plaquemines
St, Bernard
St. Charles
St. James
St. John the Baptist
St. Tammany
Tangipahoa
