Police in Opelousa Louisiana say a pregnant woman was shot and died following an alleged argument with her boyfriend.

The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of East South Street, according to Opelousas Police Chief Martin McLendon.

The police chief says the victim 31-year-old Tyana Thomas, was 5-months-pregnant when she was shot and arrived at the local hospital where she later died from her injury.

Police say they’ve charged her boyfriend, 24-year-old Maleke Guillory with two-counts of negligent homicide after he told police he and the victim were in a struggle over the loaded gun when it went off.

Police believe Thomas retrieved a gun from the bedroom and attempted to approach another woman who had appeared at their home attempting to speak with Guillory.

That is when police say Guillory stopped Thomas and tried to get the gun away from her when the gun discharged, striking Thomas. They say a nine year old- child was also in the home at the time of the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
