For a second straight month, Louisiana set a record-low unemployment rate in July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Cates says the seasonally adjusted rate of unemployment is 3.6-percent. She says, coincidentally, the employment rate is looking very good.
“This month we came in number two in the series history for the number of individuals employed,” said Cates.
The July 2022 estimate for employed individuals is 2,027,635. Cates say July saw the state add over 13,000 jobs in business & professional, government jobs, and education and health jobs.
Despite the great numbers, employers report a lack of applicants for open positions.
Cates hopes the state can grow its workforce through LWC’s “Tech Ready Louisiana” program, which offers free online courses to prepare people for the workplace. LWC has partnered with Coursera to offer thousands of courses to help people develop new skills and increase their career readiness.
“Close to 1,000 Louisianans already signed up for Tech Ready because they recognize the opportunity to take themselves from courses to careers,” said Cates, “This partnership will help people find not just family-sustaining careers, but family thriving ones.”
