Scoot: Louisiana voters are moving to the center on abortion

Louisiana is known as a red state - but a new poll shows that the state is more pro-choice than pro-life.

According to a new poll - 49% of likely voters in Louisiana identify with being pro-choice and 44% identify with being pro-life. It is important to note that being pro-choice does not necessarily mean a person is pro-abortion. Many Americans consider themselves to be pro-choice, but anti-abortion.

For those who might initially dismiss the new poll - here is my conversation with John Couvillion, who conducted the poll and can help explain how to interpret it’s results.

The poll also shows that 53% of likely voters in Louisiana would support amending the state's constitution to guarantee a right to have an abortion. That is a significant change from 2020, when 62% of likely voters said there should be no guaranteed right to have an abortion in Louisiana.

Last year, the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision by the U.S. Supreme Court essentially overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortions in 1973. Following the Dobbs decision, many right-wing Republicans openly celebrated and declared a major victory in the culture wars, but the reaction from Republicans overall drowned out the jubilant rhetoric from the far right.

In the midterm elections last year, voters in the red state of Kansas voted to guarantee protection of abortion rights and many Republican candidates refused to embrace the overturning of Roe v. Wade which reflected the sentiment of the American people. Only time will tell what Republican candidates in Louisiana will do with this new information about what their voters want.
